Temperature is one of the main factors that determine sexual reproduction in terrestrial and emergent aquatic plant species. The effect of temperature on sexual reproduction and seed production of Glyceria maxima (Hartm.) Holmb. in the southern hemisphere is unknown. Glyceria maxima collections in February 2010 at three isolated infestations in KwaZulu-Natal failed to yield a single seed, only empty panicles. Laboratory experiments showed that vernalisation had no consistent effect on seed production. Field- and laboratory-grown plants produced seeds in the 2010/2011 season, because of having sufficient time at optimum temperatures required for seed production (1 491 and 1 585 hours, respectively), compared to a shorter period (1 352 hours) of suitable temperatures during the 2009/2010 growing season. An inadequate period of optimum temperatures (15–25°C) during seed production resulted in the lack of seeds in the field in the 2009/2010 growing season. This study showed that temperature and duration of exposure thereto during the seed-production period play vital roles in G. maxima sexual reproduction. 相似文献

Marmosets (genus Callithrix) are a diverse group of platyrrhine primates
with 13-15 purported taxa, many of them considered endangered.
Morphological analyses constitute most of the basis for recognition of
these forms as distinct taxa. The purpose of this study was to provide a
molecular view, based on mitochondrial control region sequences, of the
evolutionary history of the marmosets, concomitant with a molecular
phylogenetic perspective on species diversity within the group. An
additional purpose was to provide the first comparative examination of a
complete New World monkey control region sequence with those of other
mammals. The phylogenetic analyses provide convincing support for a split
between the Atlantic forest and Amazonian marmosets, with the inclusion of
the pygmy marmoset (Cebuella pygmaea) at the base of the Amazonian clade.
The earliest branch of the Atlantic forest group was C. aurita. In the
Amazonian group, the analyses do not support the recognition of C.
humeralifer and the recently described C mauesi as distinct taxa. They do,
however, support a clear distinction between C. argentata and a strongly
supported mixed clade of C. humeralifer and C. mauesi. In the Atlantic
forest group, the phylogenetic tree suggests mixing between C. penicillata,
C. kuhli, and possibly C. jacchus. Most of the sequence features
characteristic of other mammal control regions were also evident in
marmosets, with the exception that conserved sequence blocks (CSBs) 2 and 3
were not clearly identifiable. Tandem repeat units often associated with
heteroplasmy in a variety of other mammals were not evident in the marmoset
sequences.

Individual plants of several Amelanchier taxa contain many polymorphic
nucleotide sites in the internal transcribed spacers (ITS) of nuclear
ribosomal DNA (nrDNA). This polymorphism is unusual because it is not
recent in origin and thus has resisted homogenization by concerted
evolution. Amelanchier ITS sequence polymorphism is hypothesized to be the
result of gene flow between two major North American clades resolved by
phylogenetic analysis of ITS sequences. Western North American species plus
A. humilis and A. sanguinea of eastern North America form one clade (A),
and the remaining eastern North American Amelanchier make up clade B. Five
eastern North American taxa are polymorphic at many of the nucleotide sites
where clades A and B have diverged and are thought to be of hybrid origin,
with A. humilis or A. sanguinea as one parent and various members of clade
B as the other parent. Morphological evidence suggests that A. humilis is
one of the parents of one of the polymorphic taxa, a microspecies that we
refer to informally as A. "erecta." Sequences of 21 cloned copies of the
ITS1- 5.8S gene-ITS2 region from one A. "erecta" individual are identical
to A. humilis sequence or to the clade B consensus sequence, or they are
apparent recombinants of A. humilis and clade B ITS repeats. Amelanchier
"erecta" and another polymorphic taxon are suspected to be relatively old
because both grow several hundred kilometers beyond the range of one of
their parents. ITS sequence polymorphisms have apparently persisted in
these two taxa perhaps because of polyploidy and/or agamospermy (asexual
seed production), which are prevalent in the genus.

In birds and primates, the frequency of behavioural innovation has been shown to covary with absolute and relative brain size, leading to the suggestion that large brains allow animals to innovate, and/or that selection for innovativeness, together with social learning, may have driven brain enlargement. We examined the relationship between primate brain size and both technical (i.e. tool using) and non-technical innovation, deploying a combination of phylogenetically informed regression and exploratory causal graph analyses. Regression analyses revealed that absolute and relative brain size correlated positively with technical innovation, and exhibited consistently weaker, but still positive, relationships with non-technical innovation. These findings mirror similar results in birds. Our exploratory causal graph analyses suggested that technical innovation shares strong direct relationships with brain size, body size, social learning rate and social group size, whereas non-technical innovation did not exhibit a direct relationship with brain size. Nonetheless, non-technical innovation was linked to brain size indirectly via diet and life-history variables. Our findings support ‘technical intelligence’ hypotheses in linking technical innovation to encephalization in the restricted set of primate lineages where technical innovation has been reported. Our findings also provide support for a broad co-evolving complex of brain, behaviour, life-history, social and dietary variables, providing secondary support for social and ecological intelligence hypotheses. The ability to gain access to difficult-to-extract, but potentially nutrient-rich, resources through tool use may have conferred on some primates adaptive advantages, leading to selection for brain circuitry that underlies technical proficiency. 相似文献

The endemic New Zealand ground wētā (Hemiandrus sp. ‘promontorius’) has a Naturally Uncommon conservation status. This is because of the paucity of information on its density and distribution. Here, the biology, density and distribution of a population of this wētā found in and around vineyards in the Awatere Valley, Marlborough was studied. Wētā density was assessed in vineyards, paddocks and shrublands in this valley. Soil moisture, penetration resistance, pH and organic matter were recorded at locations with and without wētā. Wētā density in vineyards was significantly higher than in either paddocks or shrub habitats. In vineyards, the density of this insect was significantly higher under-vines than in the inter-rows. Higher numbers of this wētā were found in moist soils that required lower force to burrow. Females laid an average of 55 eggs between March and April, which hatched in September. These findings highlight the intersection between agriculture and conservation. 相似文献

Natural rubber, cis-1,4-polyisoprene, is a vital industrial material synthesized by plants via a side branch of the isoprenoid pathway by the enzyme rubber transferase. While the specific structure of this enzyme is not yet defined, based on activity it is probably a cis-prenyl transferase. Photoactive functionalized substrate analogues have been successfully used to identify isoprenoid-utilizing enzymes such as cis- and trans-prenyltransferases, and initiator binding of an allylic pyrophosphate molecule in rubber transferase has similar features to these systems. In this paper, a series of benzophenone-modified initiator analogues were shown to successfully initiate rubber biosynthesis in vitro in enzymatically-active washed rubber particles from Ficus elastica, Heveabrasiliensis and Parthenium argentatum.Rubber transferases from all three species initiated rubber biosynthesis most efficiently with farnesyl pyrophosphate. However, rubber transferase had a higher affinity for benzophenone geranyl pyrophosphate (Bz-GPP) and dimethylallyl pyrophosphate (Bz-DMAPP) analogues with ether-linkages than the corresponding GPP or DMAPP. In contrast, ester-linked Bz-DMAPP analogues were less efficient initiators than DMAPP. Thus, rubber biosynthesis depends on both the size and the structure of Bz-initiator molecules. Kinetic studies thereby inform selection of specific probes for covalent photolabeling of the initiator binding site of rubber transferase. 相似文献

Res. 170, 353-364 (2008).To determine whether the physical differences between high- and low-LET radiation are reflected in the biological responses of exposed cells, we detailed phospho-protein profiles of three proteins functional in radiation repair and signal transduction. Detailing gamma-H2AX, pATF2 Ser(490/498) and pSMC1 Ser(957) kinetics after X-ray and iron-ion exposure also provides a window into understanding the underlying cellular responses. Phosphorylated forms of these proteins have been documented to co-localize at sites of double-strand breaks (DSBs) after low-LET radiation exposures, and two of these phosphorylations, pATF2 and pSMC1, are specifically dependent on ATM. Flow cytometry-based methods were used to quantify total levels of each phospho-protein at various times after irradiation. As expected, we observed a greater induction and persistence in gamma-H2AX after iron-ion (high-LET) exposure compared to X-ray (low-LET) exposure. In contrast, pATF2 and pSMC1 showed markedly lower induction levels after iron-ion exposure compared to equivalent doses of X rays. Quantification of pATF2 and pSMC1 foci revealed fewer cells containing foci and fewer foci per cell after iron-ion compared to X-ray exposure. The separate contributions of different vectors to net seed dispersal curves of diplochorous systems have rarely been characterised. In Australia, myrmecochory is a common seed dispersal syndrome and in the majority of such systems, seeds are initially dispersed ballistically. We measured ballistic and myrmecochorous seed dispersal distances in relation to canopies of Adriana quadripartita (Euphorbiaceae) and used a simulation model to estimate the net dispersal curve. We also compared seed removal rates and ant abundances under, and outside, plant canopies to examine how foraging patterns by ants may affect net dispersal.Overall ant abundance did not show a significant numerical response to seedfall; however, the abundance of the main seed dispersing ant, Rhytidoponera ‘metallica’ did. Despite this, seed removal rates did not differ significantly between canopy and open locations. Rhytidoponera ‘metallica’ account for 93% of observed seed dispersal events. On average, the ants dispersed seeds 1.54 m and in doing so, moved seed a mean radial distance of 0.76 m away from canopy edges. This contribution to net dispersal distance by ants is considerable since ballistic dispersal moved seeds a median distance of 7.5 cm. Our simulation model indicated that the combination of ballistic and ant seed dispersal is expected to result in seeds being transported a median net radial dispersal distance of 1.05 m from the canopy edge.Thus in this system, an important function of diplochory may simply be to move a higher proportion of seeds from under the canopy of parent plants than is possible by ballistic dispersal alone. This ‘dispersal-for-distance’ may result in reduced parent–offspring competition or may increase the probability that seeds reach rare safe sites for germination and recruitment. 相似文献
